New DOI Formatting Option

APA Update!

APA now accepts two formatting choices when including the DOI in your reference: the version given in the 6th edition of the APA Publication Manual and a new option in the form of a URL. Here is an example of the same DOI in these two formats:

Note that the DOI number itself is the same in both versions (10.1037/rmh0000008); only the prefix is changed (doi: or  http://dx.doi.org/). The second example shows the new option, which creates a working web link.

For more on this change and how to include the DOI in your citation, please see the full APA blog entry or the Lesley handout DOI & Other Changes in the 6th Edition.

APA Guidelines on Reducing Bias in Language

Often, when students think about APA style, they are thinking about formatting guidelines: how to format a reference for a book or an article, how to write and format their headings, what size their paper margins should be and what belongs in the running head.  THe APA's publication manual has something to say about all of those formatting details, but it also provides valuable guidelines on writing style, including how to reduce bias in your written language.

If you have a copy of the Publication Manual at hand, you can read the section called "Reducing Bias in Language," p. 70-77, for a complete discussion of recommended use.

The APA Style blog has an insightful and concise discussion of these guidelines, titled "A Little Respect"--check it out here!

Another helpful post addresses the use of the word "they" as a singular, non-gendered pronoun--read it here.

Another useful resource for writing in bias-free style are the guidelines below on using nonhandicapping language in APA journals.
