EndNote Basic - Getting Started

EndNote Basic is a web-based citation management tool from Clarivate Analytics that can be used to store and format references. It provides 2 GB of attachment and storage space and a Cite-While-You-Write plugin for Microsoft Word. EndNote also has a desktop application available, but it must be purchased from Clarivate Analytics. You can sign up for EndNote here.

Adding References

There are 5 ways to add a reference to EndNote Basic.

EXPORTING FROM @LL SEARCH

  1. To export from @LL Search, go to the detailed record page for the resource by selecting the title on the search results page.
  2. From the menu on the right side of the page, select Export.
  3. A menu of options will come up; select Direct export to EndNote Web.
  4. A popup window will come up; if you are not signed in to EndNote Basic from your browser, you will be prompted to do so. Otherwise, you will see a message saying that your record was imported!

IMPORTING FROM GOOGLE SCHOLAR

  1. To import from Google Scholar, select the Cite button under your reference, which looks like a quotation mark.
  2. From the citation window, select EndNote. You will be prompted to save a file called "scholar.enw".
  3. If you haven't already, open EndNote Basic in your browser window. Navigate to Collect and from the menu bar, Import References.
  4. Browse for your scholar.enw file, and under Import option, select EndNote Import. Choose a group to import it to and select the Import button.

IMPORTING FROM A DATABASE

  1. To import from a library database, the instructions are generally the same, but you will have to pay attention to which vendor it is from. The exception is for EBSCO databases; for any EBSCO database, follow the instructions for exporting from @LL Search. For other major vendors such as ProQuest and Gale, find the Save button (ProQuest) or Citation tools (Gale).
  2. You will be prompted to select an export style; select EndNote or RIS. This will produce a RIS file for you to download.
  3. Open EndNote Basic in your browser window. Navigate to Collect and from the menu bar, Import References.
  4. From the Import option, select the option which corresponds with the database vendor, e.g. InfoTrac (Gale) or ProQuest. Choose a group to import it to and select the Import button.

IMPORTING FROM FLO CATALOG

  1. To import books and media from the FLO catalog and other major print media catalogs, open EndNote Basic and navigate to Collect and then Online Search.
  2. Choose the catalog you want to search from the download options. Note that Lesley U does not include journal articles and other items that are in Lesley's electronic resources; for those, see Exporting from @LL Search.
  3. Enter your search terms for the resource you want to save and select Search.
  4. Choose your resource by checking the box next to the entry on the results list and choosing a group from the Add to group... dropdown above the results.

ENTERING MANUALLY

  1. Open EndNote Basic and navigate to Collect and then New Reference.
  2. Select your resource type from the Reference type... dropdown and enter the bibliographic data for your reference. Include all of the information you will need for your citation, such as the volume and issue number for a journal article.
  3.  Select the Save button to save your resource.
